Walter Edward Workman, 1900-1983 & Bertha Etta Mullins, 1897-1992 (Biographical Overview)
Walter Edward Workman was born on July 23, 1900, in the small community of Enoch in eastern Clay County, WV. He was the second of thirteen children of Nathan and Juditha Workman. Walter died November 9, 1983.
Bertha Etta Mullins was born on April 18, 1897, in the town of Clay, in Clay County. She was the oldest of eight children of Albert and Roxie Mullins. Bertha died June 21, 1992.
Walter and Bertha were married March 16, 1921, at the home of Albert and Roxie Mullins in Maysel (near the town of Clay). They had seven children, not including an unnamed, stillborn girl.
Both of my paternal grandparents spent their entire lives in Clay County, West Virginia (see maps below). You can also view additional local maps in the WV Maps section of the Resources menu tab above.
Even today, this area is very rural and sparsely populated. As was typical for that era, both Granny and Grandpa were born at home.
The timeline below further summarizes Walter and Bertha’s family life.
Within this website, I have divided their time together into five epochs (accessed through the Workman/Mullins Family History menu tab above). Genealogical information is also provided in this menu tab.
