Nathan Melvrie Workman & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1877-1965…(Historical Narratives Described)

Details of Nathan and Juditha’s history can be accessed through the Workman History-1 menu tab…via the six folders listed below.

Rather than integrate all of the historical information into on narrative, I thought it would be more compelling to present it based on who is telling the stories. That way, the author’s viewpoint is clearly discernable. The is some duplication of material among the folders, but it is worthwhile reviewing all of them because of the different presentation styles. It is always more fun to hear the information spoken by the author, so I suggest that you listen to the audio whenever it is available. Transcriptions are presented along with the audio.

• Nathan Melvrie Workman, 1877-1961 & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1882-1965 (Biographical Overview)

The Biographical Overview is my creation. It provides basic factual information and a timeline of life events.

• Nathan Melvrie Workman & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1877-1965 (Phil Hayes Narratives)

Phil Hayes is my second cousin, since we share the same great grandparents (Nathan and Juditha Workman). His grandmother was Hettie Workman Hayes, sister to Walter.

Phil is responsible for the textual content of the Workman Line folders from Jans William to Nathan Melvrie. Gathering information from available sources, Phil describes this history as a “compilation of the research done by others…researching the research done by others.” References for his research are documented in the Menu tab Resources: Resources Directory & Bibliography.

• Nathan Melvrie Workman & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1877-1965 (Hollie Workman Narratives)

Holly Workman was the next to last son of Nathan & Juditha…born 12th of 13 children. Being the son of Nathan & Juditha, Hollie provides a unique first-hand account of his parent’s lives. Most of the information in this folder was excerpted from Hollie’s written autobiography.

• Nathan Melvrie Workman & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1877-1965 (Hollie Workman Interviews)

This folder documents the interviews I conducted with Hollie, July 3, 2003, at the annual Workman Family reunion in Robinson, Clay County. [This was about the time that I also recorded a lot of sessions with Damon.] I was able to ask Hollie some questions about his parents and life in general as he was growing up.

More about the Workman Family reunion can be found the folder.

A brief interview with Alta Workman Brady is also included in the folder.

• Nathan Melvrie Workman & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1877-1965 (Damon Workman Narratives)

Damon Workman was a grandson of Nathan & Juditha. He was the fourth of seven children of Walter Workman & Bertha Mullins. Walter was the second child (and first son) of Nathan & Juditha.

It was in 2003 that I began making a concerted effort to capture voice recordings of family “elders.” Uncle Damon was one of the best story tellers, so I have a lot of his musings. Our sessions covered a wide range of topics [see Resources menu tab]. This folder documents Damon’s recollections about Nathan and Juditha. His perspective was that of a grandchild interacting with older grandparents.

 ————————————————————-

Grandparents can have a major impact on their descendants. Several of the family members that I interviewed over the years expressed strong feelings (positive and negative) about their grandparents. It was often the case that one grandparent was viewed positively, and the other was not.

For more information about grandparenting, consult the Interesting menu tab.

• Nathan Melvrie Workman & Juditha Totten Hamrick, 1877-1965 (Photo Galleries)

There are photos of Nathan & Juditha spread throughout the previous five folder. This last folder is a “catch all” for the rest of my collection.
